Detroit grew in eminence over the past century as the motor capital of the world. The post World War 2 boom saw rapid industrial growth and with it, a major influx of population. The city also helped develop the specific sound associated with Motown and thus remained at the forefront of economic and cultural scene. However, the last part of 20th century saw a decline in the economic sector and with it, a slowing down of the cultural activity as well. The major neighborhoods of this city are;
Northwest Side: This side of the city is primarily residential with lots of old housing complexes and houses. The historic architecture and the presence of universities give it an old rustic feeling. The renowned Michigan State Fair also takes place here.
Downtown: Downtown is the business centre of the city with most of the sky scrapers situated in it. This neighborhood also has a large theater district and several parks.
Midtown-New Center: This area combines the cultural hub of Midtown with its several museums and galleries such as the Detroit Institute of Art and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, with the business center of New Center which was developed in the 1920s as a midway access point for downtown and outlying factories.
Southwest Side: This neighborhood has a very multiracial community comprising of Mexicans and Asians which give its restaurants a distinct flavor. The presence of Michigan Central Stadium and the Tiger Stadium, it also has a few of the historical landmark buildings in the city.
